We added New Zealand to our travel bucket list with a trip that included three days at the spectacular Warbirds Over Wanaka air show. With our Gold Pass tickets safely tucked away, we enjoyed the flying, the setting and the scenery that only Wanaka can offer.
Warbirds Over Wanaka is smaller and more intimate than Oshkosh, and considerably easier to navigate. Exhibitors, local crafts, regional produce and New Zealand businesses add to the relaxed atmosphere.
But the setting is the star: mountains, lakes and rolling countryside make an extraordinary backdrop for the aircraft.
Three days, three different skies
Friday brought clear skies and calm weather for a varied flying display, from Tiger Moths and the Avro Vulcan to Strikemasters, Chipmunks, Yaks, Spitfires, Mustangs, Corsairs, helicopters and gliders.
Saturday brought low cloud, rain and colder temperatures. Visibility across the mountains dropped and flying activities became limited.
Sunday returned with blue skies and the mountains back in view. The flying programme resumed in spectacular fashion.
Warbirds Over Wanaka delivers a world-class aviation experience in a beautiful location, with a distinctly New Zealand character and a welcoming, relaxed feel. The next show is scheduled for 2028.
Would I go again? Sure would!
